The Squamish Nation Chief and Council adopted the official writing system for the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh sníchim in 1980. Many Sḵwx̱wú7mesh sounds do not have equivalent English sounds; for these letters we have provided an approximate sound in English. Additionally, most Sḵwx̱wú7mesh vowels have more than one pronunciation depending on its occurrence within the word. We have given examples of each of these different pronunciations.
